Jesus and the LGBTQIA community have more in common than you think

Just a thought this Easter weekend… Jesus Christ and the LGBTQIA community have more in common than you think. Jesus was someone who regularly upset the Pharisees with his teachings. His ideas were simple, yet very radical and against many things the religious groups taught at those times. This upset the local religious cultures. He was betrayed by those he loved, arrested, mocked, harassed, tortured, condemned to death by the priests, and then killed. Jesus was an innocent man that was killed because, even though Pilate found nothing wrong, the priests insisted on his death because Jesus stirred up the people with his teachings.

LGBTQIA people are experiencing the issues with many of the “religious leaders” of today. We are trying to teach the ways of Christ; love your neighbor, love God, help the oppressed and poor, and show an inclusive welcome to the outcasts of society. Yet we are demonized, we are betrayed by our loved ones, we are cast out as second class citizens, we are tortured mentally and physically, and sometimes killed… all in the name of religion because that’s how THEY think everyone should believe. Now we are not saying Christ was gay or the LGBTQIA community is Christ-like. What we are saying is that we are experiencing the same struggles as Jesus did. Our common struggles allow us to unite and stand in solidarity with Christ and with one another.

So we extend a personal invitation to you this Easter Sunday. If you do not go to church or are part of a church that casts out and demonizes people, come to Cathedral of Hope and experience an inclusive, welcoming church, where ALL ARE WELCOME.
